Teenage years are full of change — socially, emotionally, and developmentally. For teens with disability, this time can bring added challenges around making friends, feeling included, and finding their place in the world.
That’s why NDIS-funded social groups play such a powerful role. These programs aren’t just about fun (although there’s plenty of that too!) — they’re carefully designed to build confidence, connection, and independence.
At Loving Life Support Services, we’ve seen how a few hours each week in the right environment can make a lifelong difference.
🧠 Why Are Social Skills So Important for Teens?
Teens with Autism, Intellectual Disability, or psychosocial challenges often struggle with:
Reading social cues
Making or keeping friends
Managing anxiety in group settings
Feeling included in school or community life
Without support, this can lead to isolation, low self-esteem, or withdrawal from activities — all of which affect mental health, daily functioning, and life outcomes.
That’s why the NDIS recognises the value of social participation and provides funding to support it.
🤝 How NDIS Teen Social Groups Help
The right group program provides a safe space for teens to:
🌱 Practice social skills in a structured way
🎲 Try new activities (games, cooking, outings) in a low-pressure environment
💬 Build confidence through peer connection
🧘♀️ Learn emotional regulation and conflict resolution
🧩 Discover shared interests with others their age
These outcomes flow into everyday life — from handling friendships at school, to navigating group activities, to expressing needs more clearly at home.
💬 What Makes a Good Social Group?
Not all social groups are created equal. The best programs:
✅ Are age-appropriate and genuinely fun
✅ Are led by trained, empathetic support workers
✅ Support individual communication styles (verbal and non-verbal)
✅ Allow for flexibility and choice
✅ Keep group sizes small for comfort and safety
🎯 Loving Life’s Teen Social Group (Gold Coast)

Games and activities
Gentle structure (icebreakers, teamwork, skills practice)
Social skill building woven into the fun
