Funding Type Spotlight - Assistance with Self-Care Activities

If you or your loved one receives NDIS funding, you may see “Assistance with Self-Care Activities” listed in your plan under Core Supports.


This is one of the most commonly used support items and one of the most important for day-to-day independence.


In this guide, we explain what this support covers, how it can be used, and what families should look out for when choosing a provider.


What Is Assistance with Self-Care Activities?

Assistance with Self-Care Activities provides support with personal and daily living tasks to help participants live as independently and safely as possible.


According to the NDIS Pricing Arrangements, this support includes assistance with, or supervision of, personal tasks of daily life and skill development to build autonomy.


These supports can be delivered:

  • One-on-one (1:1), or

  • In small group settings (where appropriate)


They are funded under Core Supports – Assistance with Daily Life.


What Can Be Claimed Under Assistance with Self-Care Activities?

This line item can be used for practical, hands-on support with daily routines, including:

✔ Personal Care

  • Showering and bathing

  • Toileting support

  • Dressing and grooming

  • Oral hygiene

  • Hair and skin care

✔ Daily Routines

  • Morning and evening routines

  • Bedtime preparation

  • Getting ready for school, work, or activities

  • Establishing healthy habits

✔ Meal and Nutrition Support

  • Support with preparing simple meals

  • Assistance with eating (where appropriate)

  • Building independent food skills

✔ Health and Safety Support

  • Medication prompting

  • Monitoring wellbeing

  • Encouraging self-care routines

✔ Skill Development

  • Learning to complete personal care tasks independently

  • Building confidence with routines

  • Developing consistent self-management skills


What This Support Does Not Cover

It’s important to understand the boundaries of this support.


Assistance with Self-Care Activities does not include:

  • Therapy or clinical treatment

  • Behaviour therapy

  • Medical or nursing care

  • Allied health assessments


These require separate funding and qualified professionals.


This support focuses on practical, everyday assistance and skill-building, not treatment.


Additional Claims Allowed

When providing Assistance with Self-Care Activities, providers may also claim for:

  • Non-Face-to-Face Support (e.g. planning, reporting related to the participant)

  • Provider Travel (time)

  • Short Notice Cancellations (7 days’ notice)

  • Provider Travel – Non-Labour Costs (Code: 01_799_0107_1_1)


These must always be directly related to the participant’s supports.

  • Participants with ASD, intellectual disability, or psychosocial disability
