If you’ve ever opened your NDIS plan and thought, “I have no idea what this means” — you’re not alone.
The NDIS is a brilliant system when it works, but let’s be honest… the jargon can be overwhelming.Core? Capacity Building? Capital? What does it all mean?
Let’s break it down simply — and explain how your funding can be used (and how providers like us can help without needing to see your actual plan).
📦 The Three Main Buckets of Funding in an NDIS Plan
Your plan will include one or more of these three categories:
1. Core Supports
This is the most flexible category, and it covers:
Daily support (e.g. getting ready, cleaning, meals)
Community participation (e.g. going out with a support worker, joining a group)
Transport (if you receive a transport allowance)
Consumables (e.g. continence aids, low-cost assistive tech)
You can often move funding around within Core — like using it for more 1:1 hours or joining a group instead of having support at home.
2. Capacity Building
This is about building skills and independence. It includes funding for:
Therapies (e.g. OT, psychology, speech)
Support coordination
Improved daily living (e.g. life skills, emotional regulation, cooking)
Improved relationships (e.g. behaviour support)
Employment and education support
Health and wellbeing goals
Plan management fees
Each subcategory is usually separately allocated — so money for therapy can’t always be used for employment support, unless your plan is very flexible.
3. Capital Supports
This covers larger items or modifications, such as:
Assistive technology (e.g. wheelchairs, communication devices)
Home modifications
Specialist disability accommodation (SDA)
This funding is not flexible and must be used for the approved item or purpose.
🧡 How We Help Participants Understand Their NDIS Plan
At Loving Life Support Services, we never need to see your whole plan — but we can still help you understand:
What types of support you might be funded for
Whether our services fit under Core or Capacity Building
How to speak with your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager to clarify details
How to track service usage so your funds stretch across the year
What documentation we provide to help you meet plan goals
We can also work with your plan manager or support coordinator to make bookings easier — without overstepping.
🔄 Flexible Supports That Align With Your NDIS Plan
Here’s how our services generally align:
Service | Usually Funded From |
1:1 community access | Core – Community Participation |
Small group programs | Core or Capacity Building |
Life skills (e.g. cooking, shopping) | Core or Capacity Building |
