What is Community Access in the NDIS — And Why It Matters
When people think of the NDIS, they often imagine one-on-one care or personal supports at home. But one of the most powerful parts of a participant’s plan is something called Community Access — and it’s all about connection, confidence, and inclusion.
In this blog, we’ll unpack what Community Access means, who it’s for, and how Loving Life Support Services delivers fun, safe, and meaningful experiences for people with disability.
What is Community Access?
Community Access refers to supports that help NDIS participants get out into the world — to socialise, try new things, attend events, and be active members of their community. This can include:
Visiting the beach, markets or parks
Attending art classes or workshops
Going out for a meal or bowling with friends
Joining group programs like our School Holiday or Sunday Social Club
It’s about more than just outings — it’s about building independence, friendships, confidence, and life skills.
Who Can Access These Supports?
Community Access is usually funded under:
Core Supports – Assistance with Social & Community Participation
Or sometimes Capacity Building – Increased Social & Community Participation
This funding is available to people of all ages and support needs, and can be delivered one-on-one or in group settings — depending on what suits the individual best.
Why is Community Access So Important?
Without inclusive, well-run community programs, many people with disability miss out on opportunities to grow and connect. Community Access:
Builds social confidence and self-esteem
Creates chances for friendship and belonging
Encourages choice and independence
Supports mental health and wellbeing
Reduces social isolation
At Loving Life, we’ve seen firsthand how a simple outing can transform someone’s week — especially when they’re surrounded by the right people and supported at the right level.
