What’s Included in a Typical NDIS Group Day?

Group programs can be an incredible way for NDIS participants to build social skills, try new things, and develop independence in a fun, supported environment.
But if you are a parent or carer, you might be wondering what actually happens during one of these sessions. Here is a behind-the-scenes look at what a typical day at one of our Gold Coast group programs looks like, and why each element is designed the way it is.
A structured but flexible schedule
We believe in the power of routine, but we also know that participants may have very different needs from one day to the next.
A typical session includes:
Arrival and check-in with a warm welcome, sign-in, and visual timetable preview
A group welcome circle to set the tone, go over the plan, and help everyone settle in
A main activity or outing, which could be arts and crafts, cooking, bowling, a beach day, or group games
Lunch and downtime to refuel, socialise, or regulate in a quieter space
A wrap-up and reflection to celebrate wins, revisit goals, and prepare for pick-up
The structure gives participants predictability and safety. The flexibility means we can adjust when someone is having a harder day, without the whole session falling apart.
Goal-based activities that are still genuinely fun
Every activity we plan connects back to NDIS goals. Things like:
Communication and teamwork
Problem-solving and resilience
Community participation
Life skills and independence
Emotional regulation and social confidence
It might look like painting a canvas or baking cupcakes. Behind the scenes, we are supporting real learning at every step. The fun part is not incidental, it is what makes the learning stick.
Mixed approaches for different learners
No two participants are the same, so our group days are designed with different learning styles in mind.
We incorporate:
Visual aids like timetables, schedules, and social stories
Hands-on and sensory activities
Movement-based breaks throughout the day
Gentle group discussions and reflection time
Sensory-friendly adjustments made quietly as needed
Our facilitators are trained to adapt on the spot so every participant feels safe, included, and able to succeed in the way that works for them.
A supportive, empowering environment
Whether a participant is outgoing or reserved, verbal or nonverbal, brand new to group programs or a regular, our job is to create a space where they can genuinely thrive.
We keep group sizes small, build predictable routines, and focus on encouragement and gentle scaffolding rather than pressure. And we make it fun, because growth happens when participants feel safe, respected, and connected to the people around them.
For participants who are not quite ready for group settings yet, we also offer 1:1 support as a stepping stone toward group participation when the time is right.
