If keeping your yard safe and tidy feels overwhelming, you might be able to get help through your NDIS plan. From lawn mowing to weeding, the NDIS may fund regular yard maintenance — but only if it meets certain criteria.
Here’s a simple breakdown of how it works, what’s usually covered, and how to make the most of your plan.
✅ When the NDIS May Fund Yard Maintenance
The NDIS might fund yard work services if:
You can’t complete the tasks yourself due to your disability
The work doesn’t require a licensed tradesperson (e.g. no plumbing or electrical work)
The support helps you achieve your NDIS goals
It meets the NDIS criteria of being “reasonable and necessary”
The support is related to your disability
Yard maintenance is generally funded from your Core – Assistance with Daily Life budget, under the category “Assistance with Household Tasks.”
🏡 What Yard Maintenance Tasks Can Be Funded By The NDIS?
Funding can go toward paying a provider to complete:
Mowing lawns
Trimming hedges and edges
Weeding garden beds
Basic fertilising
Sweeping or cleaning walkways
Light mulching or general garden upkeep
Important: The NDIS only pays for the service, not the supplies. That means:
🛑 Not covered:
Mulch, compost, soil or fertiliser
Garden tools or appliances
Pool cleaning or spa care
Repairs, fencing or landscaping projects
💲 What Does It Cost?
NDIS hourly price limits are available here: NDIS PAPL
You don’t need a formal quote to book someone, but it’s smart to compare a few providers first.
🌱 What If I Want to Learn Gardening Skills?
If one of your NDIS goals is to build independence or learn to manage your own yard, you might be able to use your Capacity Building budget to fund skill-building supports, like:
Gardening lessons
Support worker assistance while you learn
Task coaching with a support person
✅ Tips for Working With a Yard Maintenance Provider
Make a task list (what you want done and how often)
Ask about regular service discounts
Check availability and preferred service days
Create a service agreement to confirm pricing and expectations
Sort out yard access (keys, unlocked gates, etc.)
Let them know about pets and keep animals secure during visits
📝 Bonus Tip: If you’re plan-managed, you can use any provider — they don’t need to be NDIS registered.
